Poker games have always been a favorite pastime however, in recent years it has become immensely popular. The surge of online poker games and the televising of playing poker it has developed into something of a sport. Poker games are usually based on hand ranking systems. Hand rankings systems are present in poker games as well as other card games. Full House, Royal Flush, Three of a Kind, and Two Pair are all types of hand rankings.
Though poker games revolve around a hand ranking system, there are many different variations such as Texas Holdem, Seven Card Stud, and Five Card Draw to just name a few. Playing poker involves some amount of dedication as you must spend time and research how the game works, variations, what it takes to win, and when to fold. In a poker game, those playing poker will all put chips or money into a “pot” which will be the ultimate winnings. In modern poker games there is a forced betting amount; in a low stakes game those playing poker will bet anywhere from $1-$15. The stakes in casino poker games are obviously much higher, with each forced bet in the $100-10,000. However, these forced bets in poker games are only for the initial rounds; once the game is underway those playing poker will only continue betting if they believe that there is a positive expected value.
This aspect is very important in playing poker as many believe this separates poker from other forms of gambling. When playing poker casually there is a rotating dealer whereas in casino poker there is a designated dealer. Once the poker game has begun those who wish to continue playing once their hand has been dealt will “call” which means they accept the bet, “raise” which means they not only accept the bet but will also raise the ante/blind, and lastly you have the option to fold which means your cards will not make you a winner and you are going to “leave” the game. Naturally, when playing poker you “call” or “raise” when you feel that you have a good hand and expect winnings. This is where the concept of a “poker face” comes to play, as those with a bad hand may continue to “call” or “raise” as they feel they can pressure people into folding. This process is called bluffing.
While poker games are mostly considered gambling, and primarily luck based there is a great deal of skill in playing poker. While the luck of the draw plays a huge hand, the ability to analyze the reaction of others and the other cards is also integral to playing poker. With a bad hand it is still very possibly to come out on top in a poker game if you have a great poker face and are picking up on all the little nuances around the table.
